Computer Games Still Have ‘It’
Who says computers are just for doing your work (school, job, home finance)? Computers are used for much more than just typing word documents, creating PowerPoint presentations, checking emails, sharing pictures on Facebook and posting up to the minute updates on Twitter. Your computer is used for playing games.Think computer games are just for school-aged children or teenagers? No, these kind of games are for everybody. Whether you are two or ninety-two, you play a game on your computer at some point. It may just be solitaire or FarmVille, but technically, it is computer gaming.Computers are much more versatile today than ever. Games and their graphics have come much farther than they ever have before. Your teenager can be playing a jet fighter game and the graphics are so spectacular that he feels that he is right in the cockpit. It is estimated that children or teens (and even some adults) spend on average ten to twelve hours a week playing these types of games. It is also estimated that the average employee spends around two hours per work shift playing games. I guess the crops on FarmVille are not going to harvest themselves. No one (especially adults) likes to admit they are addicted to video games. “I’m just checking on Facebook,” you may say; but what you are really doing is playing ‘Family Feud’ on Facebook with a person you never met that lives over 3,000 miles away from you. Your children come up to you, tugging on your shirt tail saying they’re starving, your spouse is due home any minute, and supper is nowhere near being started let alone ready to be set on the table. The excuses are gone, your cover is blown, and you have been caught playing computer games. These kind of games take up a lot of our time; but computer games can be very therapeutic also. Now more than ever, we are stressed. We run ourselves ragged trying to be there for everyone else, provide for our families, and we just need a little “me time.” Playing games give, many of us the ‘release’ we need to feel like ourselves again.Playing games can also help children as young as 18 months learn their colors, ABC’s, number, and hand-eye coordination. Those same skills can also benefit the elderly or anyone who needs rehabilitation in those areas.Computer games are not that pricey either. You can pick up a variety of games from anywhere from $5 in the clearance bin to over $50 for the season’s latest and greatest. Whether it is for building skills or for a personal escape; used in moderation; they are great for young and old-children of all ages.
